The backstory of the FMC who is Appalachian, contains discussions and depictions of generational trauma, rural poverty, drug use, and cyclical abuse. As a lifelong Appalachian, these depictions are written with a deep respect and love for the areas in which they take place, personal experience, and a nuanced depiction of the social structures which cause them.
This book contains stalking, discussions of childhood neglect and emotional abuse, heavy use of kink, instances of dubcon (mainly regarding stalking and pregnancy.)
Violence and weapon use is present throughout. There is gore present at the end.
The FMC gets pregnant late in the book. It’s unplanned for her, but not for him. There are frequent instances of consensual sex without birth control. Pregnancy and childbirth related content, nothing very graphic occurs. There is discussion of teen pregnancy in side character’s pasts.
Discussions of r*pe and DV occur between characters.
The FMC lives in an abusive home environment. Emotional and physical incest (not between blood relatives) is implied, discussed, and depicted through emotions and conversations. There is nothing explicitly sexual depicted on-page or discussed in relation to this and all characters are over the age of 18 when this occurs. There is also a discussion of a pregnancy that results from an abusive relationship between non-blood relatives in a character’s past. This is all encompassed in conversations concerning generational trauma and abusive cycles.
The MMC discusses his past in the foster system and his difficulties with it.
There are themes and depictions of people being stabbed to death with fence stakes in the past and present. There is an instance of penetration with the blunt end of a fence stake during consensual oral s*x.
Frequent and heavy sexual depictions are present throughout and include PIV, oral, and an*l sex, bondage with rope and cuffs, suspension, chastity equipment, daddy kink with trauma, biting, slapping, and spicy piercings. BDSM is present throughout, and may not be always depicted exactly as it should be practiced in real life due to character development, storyline, etc. Please do not look to fiction for accurate representations of BDSM.
Discussions of recreational drug use in the past including OD. Frequent alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use depicted.
Themes and depictions of misogyny, some relating to patriarchal structures and lack of access to resources such as education, work, housing, and food. There are graphic discussions and flashbacks of a mining accident and the injuries/death and trauma that result from it.
The FMC is an amateur entomologist and there’s a lot of discussion of dead bugs and butterflies, but she collects them after they’ve died naturally. No animals or bugs are harmed in this book.
